Russian artist Margo Trushina is creating a site specific, participatory artwork in the courtyard of former women’s prison in Berlin as part of platform79 exhibition during The Berlin Art Week (11-16 Sep). Trushina will invite exhibition visitors to release hundreds of helium balloons painted with Pussy Riot’s trademark balaclavas in support of the Free Pussy Riot campaign. The balloons will be tethered to the courtyard and visitors will be provided with scissors to set them free.

Margo Trushina (b.1981) studied Photography at the Moscow State University and Institute of Problems of Contemporary Art under Josef Bakhstein in Moscow, and an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art & Design in London. Twice winner of The Golden Photocamera of the Year prize in 2000 and 2003, Trushina she has shown widely in Russia, Europe and the UK. She lives and works between Moscow and London and is represented by SALON VERT in the UK.

The trial and conviction of three members of the Russian feminist punk-rock protest band Pussy Riot is continuing to attract international attention, with support from high profile musicians and artists including Sting, Madonna, Yoko Ono and Bjork.
