The city of Plymouth is all set to play host to ‘ARTIST ROOMS: Gerhard Richter’ a high-profile exhibition displaying works by German artist Gerhard Richter, widely recognised as one of the world’s most significant living artists.

‘ARTIST ROOMS: Gerhard Richter’ will launch at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday 26th September 2015 and will run until Saturday 16th January 2016. It will be open from Tuesdays to Saturdays and is free for visitors to view.

The exhibition will examine the breadth and depth of the practice of Gerhard Richter featuring a carefully chosen selection of paintings and prints including the magnificent 48 Portraits as well as examples of his abstract and mirror paintings.

The works on display are taken from ARTIST ROOMS, an inspirational collection of modern and contemporary art acquired for the nation by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland through the generosity of Anthony d’Offay with additional support from funders, including the Art Fund.

The ARTIST ROOMS tour programme, now in its seventh year, is showing at 17 museums and galleries across the UK in 2015. The tour is made possible thanks to the support of Arts Council England, the Art Fund, and in Scotland, Creative Scotland.

Thanks to even further support from the Art Fund, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery will be running a dedicated programme of talks and events alongside this high-profile exhibition.

Deputy Council Leader, Peter Smith said: “We are very excited to be hosting ‘ARTIST ROOMS: Gerhard Richter’ this autumn and delighted to have been selected as one of the 17 ARTIST ROOMS On Tour venues across the UK. Through this exhibition Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery is aiming to engage young people in a range of areas. We want them be a part of our ARTIST ROOMS experience and benefit from such an important collection of international contemporary art coming to town.”

The exhibition will be open from 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturday. It will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and for Christmas and New Year from 25 December 2015 to 1 January 2016 inclusive.
