INAUGURAL EXHIBITION AT MICHAEL WERNER, LONDON
Michael Werner is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Peter Doig. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in London since a 2008 survey at Tate Britain. The exhibition inaugurates Michael Werner’s new location at 22 Upper Brook Street in London’s Mayfair.
Peter Doig is recognized as one of the most inventive artists painting today. Few artists of his generation have done as much to explore the evocative possibilities of paint and its capacity for depth and meaning. Doig’s unlikely palette and varied approach to the material of paint mediate literal sources into scenes evocative of dreams or recollections. At times melancholic or contemplative, Doig’s paintings transport viewers outside the realm of normal daily experience. His exhibition at Michael Werner Gallery, London, features a new group of paintings. This body of work shows the artist continuing to expand the possibilities of his medium, at times returning to sources and motifs he has explored in recent years.
Born in Scotland in 1959, Peter Doig was raised in Canada before moving to London in 1979 to study painting. He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1994 and served as a trustee of the Tate Gallery from 1995-2000. In 2008 he was awarded the Wolfgang Hahn Prize from the Society of Modern Art, Museum Ludwig, Cologne. That same year, Tate Britain organized the artist’s first career survey exhibition, which later traveled to Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. The artist’s solo museum exhibitions to date include Blizzard Seventy-Seven, Kunsthalle Kiel, Kunsthalle Nuremburg and Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, 1997; Echo Lake, Museum of Contemporary Art Miami, Berkeley Art Museum and St. Louis Art Museum, 2000; Almost Grown, The Power Plant, Toronto, 2001; Charley’s Space, Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht and Carré d’Art contemporain de Nimes, 2003; Metropolitain, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich and Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover, 2004; STUDIOFILMCLUB, Museum Ludwig Cologne and Kunsthalle Zurich; and Go West Young Man, Museum der Bildenden Kunst, Leipzig, 2006. Last fall Doig exhibited a group of new paintings and monotypes at Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Works inspired by Wagner’s Ring cycle were exhibited at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, in 2011. Doig participated in the 2004 Carnegie International; Day for Night, the 2005 Whitney Biennial; Still Points of the Turning World, SITE Santa Fe’s Sixth International Biennial, 2006; The Painting of Modern Life, Hayward Gallery, London, and Castello di Rivoli, Turin, 2007; and most recently in À Ciel Ouvert: Le Nouveau Pleinairism at Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec, 2012.
